Apple Picking - Why It's good For You
The crunch of fallen leaves, colored blooms of mums and flickering lights of carved jack-o-lanterns are all autumn mainstays. The abundance of apples is also another welcome sign of fall.
I have been bugging my husband the last few days to take me to an apple orchard so we can enjoy picking apples together and today, we finally went to an apple orchard just outside town. It was a sunny but cold day just perfect for this activity. Ski High Apple Orchard is one of the most famous apple orchards in town that people go during the fall season for apple picking. It was quite a busy day and there were a lot of people. Families bringing their kids with them, couples and groups of friends. I was quite excited to this with my husband as it was our first time to do this together.
I have never seen so many apples in my life! Rows and rows of apple trees with a variety of apple species. All of them nutritious and good. Apple picking is not just a good outdoor activity but there are a couple other reasons why it's good for you.
- it is a form of family bonding where the family can go out and spend time with each other away from work, stress and the daily grind
-parents can teach their kids about the environment and how important plants and trees are to the cycle of life
-apples are fat free, cholesterol free, low in sodium and full of antioxidants
-apples can be eaten fresh, canned or cooked
-one of the best tasting sources of fiber
-apple trees can live for up to a 100 years
-eating apples can improve memory
-good for brain health and psychological well-being
Having done it for the first time, I also have a few apple picking tips I want to share with you if you want to go visit an orchard for apple picking.
Apple-picking tips:
-Be open to apples of different shades and varieties
-Feel the apples to make sure they are ripe and solid
-Do not climb or shake the trees as the limbs break easily and fruits will fall and get bruised
-Wear sturdy footwear preferably boots
-Bundle up. If you are planning on doing this in the fall, most likely, it will be cold outside
-enjoy your time while picking them!
Enjoy your apple picking experience!
XOXO,
Karen
