Karen In Malacca, Malaysia
Malacca (also known as Melaka) is the largest city and metropolis in the state which has the same name. It lies south of Kuala Lumpur and is a famous destination among tourists who want to visit this beautiful country. It is a place of personal harmony between Malaysian and Indian culture, as well as the Western culture of the British, Portuguese and Dutch. It is because of this that Malacca was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008.
Last 2010 I traveled to Malaysia with my friend Ava. It was our first time to travel together outside the country. We both decided to do Malaysia and Singapore at the same time which was a fun experience altogether. From Singapore, we rode a bus to the city of Malacca in Malaysia. It was a total of three hours bus ride from the Singapore to this beautiful city of Malacca. I have to be honest though. I am having quite a hard time trying to write about Malacca as it is a very diverse. It is incredibly modern but the Old Town that centers at Jonker Street is an entirely different world.Old. Really old and stunningly beautiful.
Malacca's musical rickshaw tricycle that will take you around the place in style and with fun!
I love Malacca. It's not the sleepy old town I expected it to be. It is vibrant and colorful. It is beautiful and gorgeous but it so full of tourists!!! So many tourists walking around into the shops, restaurants, taking pictures in the streets or riding the richkshaw tricycles to get a tour of the city.
Jonker Walk is the busiest street and famous for its shops that line the whole stretch of streets with merchants selling tourist goods from keychains to shirts, hats and everything in between. Jonker Walk is in itself a historical and architectural delight, turned gift shops.
Famosa Chicken rice balls
Malacca is a haven known for yummy local food such as the famous famosa chicken rice balls. Many people love to go there during the holidays for a foodie road trip. And because of this, we of course did not let the chance to experience this famous dish pass.
It's basically taking the chicken rice that you know and love into pieces and shaping them into mini sized golf balls. The meal is of course not complete without a tender and juicy chicken meat and its tangy chilly sauce.
My overall experience in this amazing city was amazing. I felt like I was in experiencing the best of both worlds. The modern world and at the same time a place from the old times. A crazy but amazing mix that will give you an extraordinary way to get a taste of this beautiful city.
