What To Wear To The Theater
According to the National Theater in Washington DC, " the day when eveyone formally dressed to go to the theater has passed "
The National has released it's dress code to allow patriots a freeir choice. The website says "to feel well dressed, comfortable and good about yourself for a special occassion is really the golden rule."
I believe that dressing up to go to the theater is a form of civility that needs to be ressurected.
Would I never go so far to say that a nice suit makes one person superior to another, it is easy to agree that the common denominator of dressing nicely at the theater help bring together a group of otherwise strangers.
As theater developed in ancient Greece, the artform transformed from exclusively within the elite to a class equalizer, a place where the masses would be entertained, be challenged by new philiosophies and worship gods. It was an artform for the people, by the people.Theaters were rumbunctious centers for entertainment in Shakespeare time, where the audience ate and talked (gasped) during performancees.
That sounds a little different from today's atmosphere, does it?
There are two schools of thought to choosing what to wear to the theater.
Dressing up is a must; it shows respect for the theater, the actors, and the experience.
2. Your clothing doesn't matter. People are there to see the actors, not you.
Both perspectives, are valid. You simply need to decide what one works for you. In general, the majority of people will feel most comfortable and not most confident when they make an effort to dress nicely for the theater.
So take a moment to think about hat a contemporary theater experience provides you. The theater is a place to socialize with your friends and family. It shows you another life perspectives and develops empathy. It connects you to yourself through larger than life stories and spectacles. It gives you opportunity to connect and support the community.
It's a damn good time.
Some of my favorite theater shows are listed below and I have enjoyed watching everyone of them.
Les Miserables
Miss Saigon
Wicked
Hamilton
